Most people do not have to be told the benefits of working for yourself and having a home business. Commuting to your office by walking down the hall, no high gas prices, no boss breathing down your neck those are just a few of the most obvious benefits of a home business. What some people do have to be reminded of are the pitfalls that are the most common reason for a home business failing in its first one to five years of operation.

In the brick and mortar world businesses often have to apply for financing. If they do not need start up funds they often desire extra backing for expansion and so on. That is the main reason for developing an official business plan. At the start a business plan will show a potential banker/financier that the business person seeking the loan knows everything about their business from top to bottom, and more important a reasonable length of time that it will take for the business to show a profit and they will be able to get their money back. A home business may not ever require funding from an outside source, in fact, you are much better off if you can run your home business without the high overhead of paying back a loan with interest, but a business plan is still a good idea for several reasons.

It will help you develop a complete sense of exactly what it will take to run your business, how much money you will need to keep it going for the first year or two while you are building a customer base, and how long it will take before the income is steady enough to not require extra funding from your wallet. It will also give you an idea of what kind of work is involved in every aspect of your business. Do you need employees? Can you hire independent contractors when necessary? Can you do it all yourself? Quite frankly you are always better off doing as much as possible for yourself when you operate a home business. Keeping your expenses as low as possible is vital for success.

As you get settled into your home business make sure you avoid the final pitfall and you will develop a successful business: don't be tempted to expand too fast. A little taste of success early on is common in a home business. There is a great tendency to jump for joy and expand. After all, if it is working on your current level, more will be even better. Remember that with more comes higher overhead, the probable need for more hands doing the work and therefore extra payroll expense and tax headaches. Go slow and enjoy the success as it develops naturally and you will be a big winner in your home business.
