Book Description
If you're looking for yet another useless, "fluff-filled" book on home based businesses, then this book isn't for you. Instead, this book is for real people who want to run a real business. Whether you want to work at home on your computer, open a daycare, start a local service (like a plumber, computer consultant, pet sitter, etc), or anything else, then Start and Run a Real Home Based Business is what you've been waiting for. With his free-wheeling, entertaining style, Entrepreneur Dan Furman talks about his past and current business successes (and failures), and brings together 50+ topics essential to home based business owners. Pulling no punches, Furman shows you exactly what makes a home based business succeed or fail. In a blunt (yet fun), "NO BS" manner. You'll laugh, you'll nod your head, and (most of all) you'll learn what it takes to truly succeed in owning a small business. Highlights of the included CD: - Sample press releases

Great advice in every sentence June 13, 2008 J. Harris (Saugerties, NY) This book is full of great advice. It many instances, the author is sharing what he has learned through hard experience, so that the reader does not have to duplicate the mistake. This is a must read for any budding entrepreneur.
A great book for anyone starting a business! April 22, 2008 Janie Behr (Louisville, Kentucky)
I highly recommend this book to anyone starting a business. It is filled with many helpful tips, ones that point out what you should be doing, and others that point out what you shouldn't. This book gives me the knowledge and positive attitude to get through the first few difficult months. To be honest, I kept knocking on the wrong doors until I found this book. I felt like Christopher Columbus without a map. I wasn't sure what to do, who to trust, and what was really important and what wasn't, what to spend money on, the value of bartering, the importance to advertise, and how to structure my day so I don't work too much or too little. Working from home is very different than working in an office. The book has helped me set attainable goals, set priorities, and what is important to do right now. Dan Furman's book is a gift to anyone starting a new business. The book is direct, to the point, and funny. It covers a multitude of subjects and I take it with me wherever I go. I jot down ideas during the day and Start & Run has everything I need to know. A new business is like having a baby. It takes the same care, time and attention that a newborn needs. I found starting my business was like having my first child. I didn't have a clue what to do first. There were so many first-time, important decisions to be made and I kept looking for a mentor. Well, I found one here. Five Stars
Great place to start April 1, 2008 Scott Stephenson The book is written in a very engaging and conversational style. It's written as a series of essays on various topics, which represent Dan's opinions, so you won't find references to other work. That being said, I found the content to be very sound and reasonable. This is written as an introduction to small business and that's precisely what it is.
Recommended! December 6, 2007 Another Bookworm Relevant and specific information from someone who has succeeded (and failed!) at home based businesses. Covers practical aspects of setting up a business, including not only the basics (zoning and licenses) but also advice on dealing with problem customers, how to take credit cards, e-commerce, and offering guarantees. Would have been 5-star except for one little flaw: He tells the reader not to write a business plan -- then goes on to discuss the business model, the market, the product, financing, etc. -- all the relevant points of a business plan. He may not have MADE a business plan, but it's clear he follows one successfully.
Keeps it straight and simple November 5, 2007 Allison E. Wood (Chapel Hill, NC United States) As a fellow writer, I found this book relevant and helpful in a very straightforward way. Dan Furman's advice is heavy on common sense and refreshingly light on the stuff that just gets in the way, like overthinking your logo design before you've got a sales plan in place. Furman helps you realize that, in order to get up and running, you just have to put one foot in front of the other - hopefully with this smart book as your guide.
