Product Description As the pre-eminent publisher of nine books on franchising, Source Book Publications is constantly asked "What are the best franchises?" Since there are over 2,300 active North American franchise systems, there clearly is no simple answer. This is especially true given the individual needs, experience and financial wherewithal of a widely divergent pool of prospective franchisees. To at least partially answer the question, however, our staff has broken the franchising industry into three major categories -- food-service, retail and service-based franchises. Within each group, a rigorous, in-depth analysis was performed on literally hundreds of proven franchise systems to arrive at what we feel are the top 100 franchises. Companies were evaluated on the basis of historical performance, brand identification, market dynamics, franchisee satisfaction, the level of initial training and on-going support, financial stability and various other key factors. The end result of evaluating over 500 franchise systems is Bond's Top 100 Franchises. Many of the companies selected are household names (Blimpie, Century 21, Dunkin' Donuts, GNC, Jackson Hewitt, ServiceMaster Clean). Others are rapidly growing, mid-sized firms (Aaron's, Kumon, Long John Silver's, Merry Maids) that are also strong national players. Still others are somewhat smaller systems that demonstrate sound concepts, exceptional management and an aggressive expansion system (Carvel, Children's Orchard, FISH Window Cleaning, Red Roof Inns, Wing Zone). Unlike other publications that tout the "Best Franchises," there was absolutely no favoritism (usually a function of advertising dollars) shown to any franchise during the selection process. The evaluation process is only the first of several critical and time-consuming steps toward ultimately owning your own franchise. We encourage you to look over the 100 exceptional companies listed in this book before making any final decision on a system that you will be married to for the next 10 or so years. The few hours you spend here could well mean the difference between a marginal and an exceptional investment decision. Do your homework!

This book was a disappointment March 24, 2008 L. Mosley 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this book with the expectation that the author had culled out the best franchises being offered, using a combination of factors including franchisor support, training, cost to value ratios, franchise fees, start-up costs, litigation issues and discussions and interviews with actual franchise owners. Instead the reader has to take the author's word for how they came to the conclusion that these particular franchises are the best, based on a vague statement that amounted to one paragraph at the bottom of page 15 which includes the phrase "We sought the opinion of friends." What??? There is no proof based on the information inherent in the book that would illustrate why these particular franchises are the top 100. In addition, all information in the book can be found on any franchise website, Bond is not offering any additional insight. The information is very basic and seems to be written for a young teenager who wants a cursory review of franchising. Also the editing is careless. An example is the information given regarding Merry Maids. On one page the franchise fee is listed at between $19-27k. Under the total investment required section, the franchise fee low range is listed at $3800.00. Even though Bond publishes another book on How much a person can make in each franchise, no mention is made regarding profits of individual franchise owner, or corporate profits, which I found rather odd, in light of the fact that just a little effort on publishers part might have helped a potential franchisee immensely. Finally, out of 100 of the best franchises, Bond offers at least four real estate companies, and at least five hotel chains, including the Hilton, where total investment required is between $33-57 million dollars. The former, in the current economic climate would probably not be a good idea, and the later, most of which are out of reach financially for 99.9% of potential franchise owners, should not even be listed. As if someone with 57 million dollars would be reading this book in an effort to decide whether to buy a Hilton Hotel. Another silly listing is Merkinstock, which you can research on your own to find out why it's a silly listing. I am the owner of a franchise, and I buy many marketing and business books through Amazon, however I don't usually write reviews. This is my first negative review but I felt it necessary to warn potential buyers that this book is not worth the paper it is written on, and personally, I feel that my intelligence was insulted. I am really upset. In fairness, I have skimmed through Bond's other book, 'How much can I make?' and a book store and it seems to be a bit more thoroughly researched.
