Easy Read December 24, 2008 Marisa (Southern California) I found the information contained in Work From Home to be very usefuly. I am a stay at home mom and we have recently found that we need a second income. This book reminds me that I need to be organized in my work and treat my home business as what it is, a business. There are many usefully bits of information contained in this book. A good help when making the decision to work from home.
A good start for the work-from-home entrepreneur December 23, 2008 J. Williamson (Bucks County, PA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Every day the news has reports about economic downturns and global financial bailouts, and that leaves many with very uncertain feelings about their financial futures, especially those who have had to face potential layoffs. There are others who have had their employer suggest that work-from-home options may be good for the short or long-term future of their company, but they have no clue where to begin when offered with such an option. As the product description suggests, the Work From Home Handbook is a good resource for anyone who dreams of a work-from-home career, either as an option with their current employer of in preparation for stepping out on ones own. Authors Diana Fitzpatrick and Stephen Fishman have taken an upbeat, hands-on approach describing the steps that one can take to start their own work-from-home career. They offer step-by-step, systematic advice for those looking at telecommuting, whether it be for a day or two each week, or in preparation for a more permanent solution as a freelancer. The authors ask the question "Can You Really Make It Work?" and a look at the chapters show that they have some good suggestions to this end: 1. Working at Home: The Win-Win Solution 2. Are You Ready for Life Without the Water Cooler 3. Can You Do Your Job at Home? 4. Making Your Case 5. Finding a New, Teleworkable Job 6. Go Freelance! 7. Telework and Taxes 8. Strategies for Work-at-Home Success To really get the most out of this book, it's one which should be read from beginning to end as opposed to bouncing around and trying to skim the surface. There's a lot of good information here for those considering the telecommuting option. But as we see more downsizing occurring in the daily headlines, preparing a parallel option of freelancing as an independent contractor may be worthwhile. Other books that you may wish to consider include Retire - And Start Your Own Business: Five Steps to Success, but don't let the title throw you. It's also from NOLO, and has a number of excellent checklists that could be valuabe resources for any first-time entrepreneur. The CD-ROM included with the book has the Excel spreadsheets and the forms used in the book, which can be quite helpful. There's also Rieva Lesonsky's Start Your Own Business, which starts with "Are you ready to be an entrepreneur?" The author is the Vice President and Editorial Director of Entrepreneur Magazine, and this thick book is chock full of on-topic info. However, my hands-down favorite in this general work-from-home category is Will Work from Home: Earn the Cash--Without the Commute, a 5-star offering by Good Morning America's workplace contributor Tory Johnson and consumer advocate Robyn Freedman Spizman. The authors explain how to turn today's cultural changes to their advantage without giving up an income, offering scenarios where one might want to consider working from home. In summary, Work From Home Handbook: Flex Your Time, Improve Your Life will help you find the right option that to fit your personal and professional goals through its systematic, step-by-step advice. This is a good book for those who are trying to convince an employer to let them telecommute, or for those who have had an employer suggest such a solution as an option. It's not a solid source of information for those who are considering starting their own business, though some of those books suggested above can help with that. Look into this book, along with a few others, if you're seriously considering telecommuting, even if its only for a few days each week.
Decent guide to negotiating commuting from home December 18, 2008 Cindy Dollen (Laurel, MD United States) I must admit that I expected something else from this book. As a stay-at-home mom who'd like to make a little money working from home, I didn't find this book a fit to my needs. However, if you are currently working and would like to spend some of your time telecommuting or working from home, this book has been written with you in mind. You'll find helpful tips on negotiating a work from home schedule with your boss, managing your time at home, keeping up with the office, etc.
A great guide for the aspiring telecommuter/home business owner December 18, 2008 Lupa (Portland, OR) As someone who dislikes the idea of having to travel hours each day just to go to a job in a place I don't like, I was overjoyed to get a chance to review this guide to working from home. And what a great resource it is! This is a very well-organized, concise text that covers a lot of ground in a surprisingly small number of pages (152, to be precise). The authors are realistic about the fact that you can't just walk into work and say "Hi, I'm working from home from now on". They outline how to create a plan for getting out--and also what to do once you succeed. How do you stay focused on your work? What happens if you decide to work from project to project and are worried about paying the bills? How do you deal with taxes? How about child care? All these and more are covered in this well-written book. I'm going to be utilizing material from it, as will my husband, as we work on our respective self-employment ventures.
Great starter book for getting to work from home November 26, 2008 Joseph J. Slevin (Carlsbad, CA United States) Whether your employer is willing to allow it or you want to venture out on your own, this is an excellent step by step introduction on what you can do and would do if you got to work from home. The book introduces the concept and gives you quick hitting facts and tidbits of information on how it can save your company money and you in particular a whole lot of time. The book discusses the stress of long commutes and how even working from home just one day a week, can go a long way to improving our outlook on life. Being one who currently has the luxury to work from home every day as a contractor recruiter, I really wished I had seen this book earlier. It has check lists and guidelines for what you need in your office, so you don't have to forget things, also, if you go freelance, it guides you on what to charge for, what going rates for billing could be and paperwork you will need for agreements with clients. Additionally, the book allows you to explore the opportunities to move on from a job that may not allow you work from home, in this economy, at least planning for such an occurence is really a good idea. In fact, exploring your skills and how they may be good for work from home possibilities is always a good idea, even if just to do some additional pickup work. Very simple to read and not very time consuming, this is a great introduction with tools and tips to help you along the way. I will add other books from NOLO in the near future that match my needs in my work.
